Adventures in Goa in the Monsoon

3 days in Goa during Monsoon

Old Goa is 9km east of Panaji.   A handful of imposing churches and convents remain from the original city.  We took a look at a few of them.

Tomb of St. Francis Xavier: a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built by the Portuguese when they colonized the region and inside lies the body of St. Francis Xavier, kept here in a tomb which is uncovered every 10 years to display to the public.

Parsi Cooking Classes @ sodabottleopenerwala

The Parsis take their food very seriously. No wonder, since Parsi cuisine perfectly braids together Iranian, Gujarati, British, even Portuguese and Goan influences.

Mumbai is dotted with charming Parsi restaurants and Irani food. We decided to participate in a cooking class to learn more.

Popular Parsi dishes include:

  • Chicken farcha (fried chicken)
  • Patra ni machhi (steamed fish wrapped in banana leaf)
  • Dhansak (lamb, mutton, goat, chicken or vegetables in lentil or toor daal gravy)
  • Sali murghi (spicy chicken with fine fried matchstick potatoes)
  • Kolmi no patio (shrimp in spicy tomato curry)
  • Khichri (rice with toor daal or moong daal)
  • Saas ni machhi (yellow rice with pomfret fish fillets in white sauce)
  • Jardaloo sali boti (boneless mutton in an onion and tomato sauce with apricots and fried matchstick potatoes)
  • Tamota ni russ chaval (mutton cutlets with white rice and tomato sauce)
